Pine Hill Cemetery

Pine Hill Cemetery – burials (1883-1928)

The history of the Pine Hill railway construction camp and terminus town is reflected in its early cemetery records. The early burials (1883 to 1885) include burials occurring before and while Pine Hill was the railway terminus, a terminus for carriers (using horse or bullock teams) and before the businesses and workers had moved to camps and towns further west. The first burials, those of the Chamberlain twins are registered as being at Pine Hill Creek, the name first used to identify the rail terminus.

Later burials reflect the change of Pine Hill to a railway siding and centre for the pastoralists who lived nearby.

The cemetery is now unfenced and very few memorials remain.

Notes on the database

The information included in the database has been collected in recent decades. An initial source was the compilation of Jericho Pine Hill. Burials and Monumental Inscriptions by Pat Murphy in 1998 and many details have been verified through the Queensland Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, Queensland State Archives inquest files and from newspapers.

Registration of deaths and births

The registration of death for all but 2 (marked with *) of these burials is available at the Queensland Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. The significant number of birth registrations on the list (50 of 89) indicates the toll this isolated situation took on infants and children in Pine Hill.

Burial date

Few burial dates are included but are accessible on the full death registration details available from the Queensland Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
